Cellphones and your Insurance Rates
Question: Does a violation for using a cellphone while driving affect my insurance rates?
In the past, insurance carriers dismissed cell phone tickets. Over the last decade, more and more carriers began charging for cell phone violations, realizing that there is a correlation between distracted drivers, accidents, and severity of claims. Starting in January of 2019, there has been an increasing trend among insurance carriers to weigh cell phone violations more heavily. Due to the severity of cell phone related claims, there has been an uptick of insurance carriers viewing these violations equivalent to DUIs and DWIs. With some carriers, this may make you ineligible to drive depending on your CDL experience. With other carriers, you may see some substantial increases in rates.
